Machining a Hollow Brass Easter Egg

This is an Machining a Hollow Brass Easter Egg project — a brass hollow Easter egg jewelry box designed to store small items such as rings and earrings. It also serves as a benchmark 4-axis simultaneous machining case for the Carvera Air desktop CNC machine, an artistic piece that combines precision manufacturing with vintage aesthetics.

You can complete the project using materials of your own choice. The uploaded model files include the overall assembly drawing, part drawings, and tooling drawings. The production process is relatively complex, suitable for experienced maker enthusiasts and long-term users of MAKERA devices. You may also further optimize the model based on your needs.

The core challenge of this project lies in 4-axis simultaneous curved surface machining, hollowing precision control, and thread fitting, rather than the finished product itself. Below is the project procedure description. You may download the NC toolpath files for this project, then complete machining by following the video tutorial and the procedures below:

Procedure 1: 4-Axis Raw Material Preprocessing

Clamp two brass bars on the 4-axis fixture: one 50 mm diameter × 60 mm length, and the other 50 mm diameter × 34 mm length. Upload and select the program: 1_GD. Start the machining task and wait for the machine to finish this procedure.

Procedure 2: Upper Cover – Internal Hollowing & Thread Engraving

Install the 3-axis module tool according to the video tutorial. Use a pressure plate to clamp a standard brass bar of 50 mm diameter × 34 mm length. Upload and select the program: 2_F3.175T1-Q3.175T3-M4T6. Start the machining task and wait for the machine to finish this procedure.

Procedure 3: Lower Base – Internal Hollowing & Thread Engraving

Install the 3-axis module tool according to the video tutorial. Use a pressure plate to clamp a standard brass bar of 50 mm diameter × 34 mm length. Upload and select the program: 3_F3.175T1-Q3.175T3-M4T6. Start the machining task and wait for the machine to finish this procedure.

Procedure 4: 4-Axis Hollow Engraving

Screw together the internal and external threads of the egg cover and base to form a spiral opening-and-closing structure. Follow the video tutorial to clamp the part using the 4-axis unit and an additional 4-jaw chuck. Perform tool setting and coaxial alignment calibration for the 4-axis rotary table.

The 3D probe forms electrical connection with the engraving machine frame and 4-axis accessories, enabling automatic workpiece zero-point detection by sensing the metal material.
